By contrast, a wide area network not only covers a larger geographic distance, but also generally involves leased telecommunication circuits.

For example, if you connect a printer to a machine on your network and use your computer's software to share the printer, the printer is not really a LAN device since it is not directly connected to the LAN. It will then be part of the LAN if you attach a Wi-Fi adapter or connect an Ethernet cable to the same printer.
