Answer:

A letter to the editor is mostly focused in affairs and events, it can be a complain or an appreciation which will be of interest to the readers. A letter to the editor can be a response to a news report or an article that was published by the newspaper. Here you have to mention the date of publication and the headline. This too may be either you agree with or disagree with the news report or a write up. You must explain with facts why you disagree.

I remember a time when I disagreed with a Deputy Commissioner over killing of stray dogs. His order to kill all stray dogs appeared in several newspaper. I disagreed with his order. Our newspaper debate lasted more than than 3 weeks. I told him he is putting up a notice of Wanted Death like during Wild West times.

As the president of a youth organization dealing with human rights, animal rights, etc etc, I was not going to back down even though he was an IAS Deputy Commissioner. My first rejoinder to the news report was to write that his order to kill all stray dogs is wrong. I said that there is very few stray dogs in our town. So the veterinary department should catch all the stray dogs, treat their diseases and vaccinate them and then put them up for adoption. Most kids and even adults loves to keep dog pets. Our argument became famous because it kept for many days.

Finally, he replaced his order. His new order was compulsory vaccination and that no dog should be allowed to roam freely in the streets during the day.

A letter of inquiry to the editor of a newspaper is easier to understand because it is already in the name. You can enquire about any availability of vacant post for employment. You can either email or go personally with your qualifications papers and curriculum vitae. You can enquire about the rate of advertisement per square centimeter.

NB: Not everything is done by the Editor himself. There is too much local, national and academic news to deal with. Most of his jobs are done by other office staff like the Associate or Assistant Editor.
