Answer :-

The difference between meiosis and mitosis is as follows :-

  • "Mitosis" takes place in the somatic cells only whereas, "Meiosis" takes place in the germinal cells only.

  • In "Mitosis", the Prophase is simple and short whereas in "Meiosis", the Prophase is long with sub-stages.

  • In "Mitosis", no exchange of parts between chromatids of a chromosome takes place whereas in "Meiosis", mutual exchange of parts between the chromatids of a chromosome takes place.

  • In "Mitosis", no Chiasmata are formed whereas in "Meiosis", Chiasmata are formed.

  • In "Mitosis", crossing over doesn't take place whereas in "Meiosis", crossing over takes place.

  • The process of "Mitosis" gets completed in only one stage whereas, the process of "Meiosis", takes two stages to get completed.

  • In "Mitosis", 2 daughters cells are produced whereas in "Meiosis", 4 daughter cells are produced.
