Metal excess , as the name suggests , means, there is an excess of a cation , hence it occupies interstitial space as in ZnO , or anions are lost , which creates vacancies, where electrons released by the cation gets seated (F centre). And metal deficiency is where , there is a deficit in the metal atom !
