Metro rail are what in industry parlance are Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS). MRTS have passenger capacity of 5000-8000 passengers per hour per direction. They act as trunk routes, think local trains. Typical cost of MRTS would be Rs. 200 Cr/ km. In Mumbai it is higher for a number of reasons.Mono rail are Light Rapid Transit Systems (LRTS). LRTS have passenger capacity of 1500-2000 phpd. These are feeder systems or systems where the pax volumes do not warrant MRTS. Typical cost of LRTS would be Rs. 80 Cr/ km.In a transport grid, you would need a combination of both along with bus routes to the feeder service/ trunk lines.
