"point" of time refers to a particular moment whereas 'period 'of time refers to a span of time.for eg., we say that give ma this pen at this point of time, but we say that i want the letter within this period of time. here lies the differences.

We use for with a period of time in the PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.
AND
the point of time refers to*3years, 4years, etc.
