Molecular Formulas and Structural Formulas. Molecular formulas contain no information about the arrangement of atoms. Because of this, onemolecular formula can describe a number of different chemical structures. A structural formula isused to indicate not only the number of atoms, but also their arrangement in space.

The molecular formulas show the correct number of each type of atom in the molecule. The electron dot diagrams (Lewis structures) show the arrangement of those atoms and all of the valence electrons.
The structural formulas show the arrangement of the atoms and the covalent bonds between them.
