Monoecious plants have both the male and the female flowers in the same plant. Mono- means “one,” and it refers to the fact that both types of flowers appear in just one individual. That is, one plant or tree produces both the pollen and the fruit/seeds, on two types of structures.

Diecious plants are divided into female individuals and male individuals. Di- means “two.” For example, in the ginkgo tree, one tree will produce only pollen (male), another tree will produce only seeds (female) and must be fertilized by pollen from the lake tree to produce them.

This can be difficult to remember; my brain usually wants to associate “monoecious” with a single plant that behaves as only one sex, and “dioecious” when a single plant has both sexes, which is the exact opposite of correct.

However, the term refers not to individual plants and their attributes, but the system the species uses for sex and reproduction. I remember that “di is for divided” because the biological sexes for that species sex system are divided into two distinct individuals. They’re split up, like, for example, human beings, and almost all animals: dogs and cats, kangaroos, fruit flies, or the Skexis and the Mystics in Dark Crystal.

Meanwhile the monoecious ones have it all figured out, they’re cool enough to have combined gender and can pollinate themselves. Cool as a cucumber, that is (cucumbers are monoecious). There are male flowers and female flowers on the same plant.

There’s a third category you should know, perfect flowers. They’re so dang Age of Aquarius that their flowers have altogether merged into a two-in-one, containing a pistil and a stamen in the same flower. This is most of the plants you come across.
