Answer:

In the snake world, there are 2 basic types of venom. These types of venom are Cytotoxic (affects the cells) and Neurotoxic (effects the nervous system). And you all know I really love venomous snakes and venom is my passion so I wrote this blog to tell the difference. And in general Vipers have cytotoxic venom and Elapids have Neurotoxic venom. Even though there are a few venomous snakes like Black necked cobras and Mojave rattlesnakes that have both types, but most only have one. So let’s begin discussing the types of venom.

Cytotoxic Venom

user uploaded image

Cytotoxic venom like before stated attacks the cells and is used by vipers like the Gaboon, Rhino, Puff adder, cottonmouth, adder, rattlesnake ETC and some elapids. A bite from a cytotoxic snake causes external bleeding from the bite and all the orifices of the human body. The venom causes severe local tissue damage which usually results in amputation. The damage can cause gangrene, severe muscular damage, vascular damage, and damages the organs and causes internal organs. This venom is extremely scary because there’s a lot of tissue damage and the massive amount of swelling and causes disfigurement. This also can create permanent damage with a body part damaged and will cause further pain. But in 3rd world countries where gender roles still exist, when the man or the bread winner gets bitten and has to be amputated if they make it the family loses their livelihood and the family is thrown off.

Neurotoxic

Neurotoxic venom attacks the nervous system and is used by mambas, cobras, kaits, taipans, brown snakes, red belly black snake, and other vipers. Upon being bitten there will be some swelling, localised pain, and a metallic taste in case of mambas. Then there will be worse pain, headache and you will feel light headed as internally your organs will be shutting down as they will be paralyzed and you’ll struggle to breath as your lungs and airways start to become paralyzed. Cause of death will be suffocation as your lungs and airway will be completely paralyzed or cardiac arrest. If the bite victim survives they will suffer a lot of pain and arthritis issues later on.

Conclusion

This is the difference between the types of venom. Cytotoxic and Neurotoxic may have different ways of affecting victims. But they all create lots of damage to the victim. So I hope you enjoyed and smack that like button and throw me a comment. Ciao
