Like technology and history in general, transport technology has evolved over time and in different civilizations. The difference between “modern” and “old” transport thus depends on what time period (and what place) you mean by “old”.
Here are a few examples of major changes made possible by transportation technology evolution in the past two centuries. The dates apply to western Europe and North America, sometimes later in other locations.
– railway technology (early 19 c.) increased the speed, reliability, and capacity of ground transport by a huge factor, stimulating the large-scale development of natural resources and industry.
– railway technology also allowed remote governments to control and settle vast extents of territory, the basis of the expansion of the United States and Canada.
– electric urban transit technology (late 19 c. – streetcars (trams) and metros) allowed cities to grow prodigiously, and also for their hugely increased population to come together to work in centrally located skyscrapers
– shipping container technology (mid 20 c.) made most of the ports of the world obsolete, causing them to be rebuilt. When the sites were changed, old ports became urban recreation or shopping centres or new neighborhoods.
