Heya fam!

Overlapping social difference leads to social division. When one social difference becomes more important than the other and people start thinking of them in singular and exclusive terms. This creates social tension. Overlapping social differences can be harmful for the nation as it creates disunity. For Ex:- The difference b/w Blacks and Whites in America.

Cross Cutting social differences are however not that harmful, They're easier to accommodate. They do not create disunity. It is difficult to pit one group of people against the other in cross Cutting social differences. For Ex:- The difference b/w Protestants and Catholics in Netherlands cross cut each other.
