What is the Difference between Hydraulic Cylinder and Pneumatic Cylinder?
Generally, there are no significant differences between hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. Pneumatic cylinders use compressed air to create linear force and hydraulic cylinders are used for creating a mechanical force in a linear motion. Pneumatic cylinders respond quickly and hydraulic cylinders are capable of much greater thrust over a generally-longer actuating time. But, pneumatic cylinders are very inexpensive, whereas hydraulic cylinders are not. Here we have mentioned some common differences between pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders.
Pneumatic cylinders offer a very clean system which is suitable for food manufacturing processes and other processes which require no risk of contamination. Hydraulic cylinders are generally not used in these environments due to the risk of hydraulic oil leaks from faulty valves, seals or burst hoses.
Hydraulic cylinders deal with the fluid media, whereas pneumatic cylinders deal with the air. This difference makes the hydraulic cylinders a better option for the precision motion transmission.
Hydraulic cylinders are used in controlling or harnessing power with the use of pressurized fluids, whereas pneumatics studies, how pressurized gases influences mechanical motion or movement.
Pneumatic cylinders rarely provide much more than a hundred pounds per square inch of pressure to the piston, whereas hydraulic cylinders are capable of anywhere from 1500 to 10,000 psi, which can be ten to hundred times the force of a pneumatic cylinder.

Pneumatic cyclinders often use compressible gases to bring about a reciprocating motion in the piston.Pneumatics offer rapid movement of cylinders and have the great advantage of availability in very small sizes. This is mainly due to air compressor flow rates, air is very agile and can flow through pipes very quickly and easily with little resistance, while hydraulic oil is a viscous substance and requires more energy to move. Also in pneumatics, cylinders and valves can dump their compressed air straight to the atmosphere when they need to change direction or alter their state quickly, compared with hydraulics where the oil must be routed back to the reservoir.
Compressibility of gases is the principle that drives the effectiveness of output. Because the operating fluid is a gas, leakage from a pneumatic cylinder will not drip out and contaminate the surroundings, making pneumatics more desirable where cleanliness is a requirement.
Prominent types are single acting , double acting pneumatic cylinders.
On the other hand the Hydraulic cylinder are mechanical actuators that give force by application of presurrised fluid .Hydraulic cylinders get their power from pressurized Hydrajliv fluid, which is typically oil. The hydraulic cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel, in which a piston connected to a piston rod moves back and forth. The barrel is closed on one end by the cylinder bottom (also called the cap) and the other end by the cylinder head (also called the gland) where the piston rod comes out of the cylinder. The piston has sliding rings and seals. The piston divides the inside of the cylinder into two chambers, the bottom chamber (cap end) and the piston rod side chamber (rod end / head end).
Flanges clevises, Lugs are common cylinder mounting options. The piston rod also has mounting attachments to connect the cylinder to the object or machine component that it is pushing / pulling.
