• Prepositions of time are used when the sentence is based on time.

Example: I will reach there at 3:30 p.m.

Here, 'at' preposition comes before and tells us about the time that is '3:30 pm'. Therefore, it is a preposition of time.

• Prepositions of place are used when the sentence is based on a place.

Example: The festival is being held at the open field.

Here, 'at' comes before and tells us about the place 'the open field' and therefore, it is a preposition of place.

Notice how the same preposition 'at' can be used as both preposition of time as well as place. Therefore, it is necessary to know the sentence before we can decide whether it is preposition of time or place.
