Oral contraceptive is a hormonal method which contain contraceptives which are usually employed by suppressing ovulation (secretion of ova or ovum). It I said confined of three main and different types- oral contraceptives (given through oral pills), nonhormonal contraceptives and some of the emergency contraceptive when it is in the phase of immediate need after or befor pregnancy.

This Hormonal pill (oral contraceptives) will act in four main different ways:

1) This Acts by the inhibitory actions of the ovulatory phase or ovulation completely suppressing it, hence, stops the fertilization in the first stage itself.

2) It Alters or provides alternative changes in the uterine endometrium to the endometrial lining, thus, making it unstable and unsuitable for implantation of the fertilized egg (so can be taken after 2 to 3 days after the sperm has entered the uterine wall into the ampulla of the Fallopian tube and fertilized it, still it will not undergo later stages such as implantation to form an embryo).

3) Provides a complete altercation and multitude of changes to cervical mucus, thus, impairing its ability to allow passage and transportation of sperms (if it has entered into the oviduct, somehow, in the next 24 hours should take the pill).

4) It also works by the inhibition of the motility of sperms and the secretory activity of Fallopian tubes, thus, nonmotile eggs and sperms are created and they cannot go further for entering into ovum or ova and making it fertilized in anymore of the stages.

Yes, the pills are taken orally only for 21 days in the menstrual cycle starting from the 5th day and ending lastly on the 25th of its due course. It is also advisable to restart the course after a small gap of 7 days irrespective of the onset or nonset of menstruation period during the pill free days. When you or any other female misses the dose or the pill, whenever that female or that individual remembers , sometimes take it two at a time as, this helps in keeping the hormone level extremely low for contraception.
