Refraction of light through a glass prism

Refraction is the bending of light when it goes from one medium to another so, when a ray of light passes through a glass prism, refraction of light occurs both, when it enters the prism as well as when it leaves the prism. Since the refracting surfaces are not parallel, therefore, the emergent ray and incident ray are not parallel to one another. In this case the ray of light is deviated on passing through the prism.

A glass prism is a transparent object having two triangular ends and three rectangular sides. The refraction of light in glass prism is different from a glass slab. This is because in glass prism, the incident ray of light is not parallel to emergent ray of light

When a ray of light enters the glass prism it

glass prism and second when it comes out of the prism. This is because the refracting surfaces of the prism are not parallel to each other. Also, when the ray of light passes through the prism it bends towards its base.

Dispersion of light

In 1665, Isaac Newton discovered that white light consists of seven colours. He found that if a beam of white light is passed through glass prism then it will split in to seven colours. These colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (VIBGYOR).

Difference between glass slab and glass prism

Glass Slab                                                                   Glass Prism

↪ It is rectangular in shape.                          ↪ It has two triangular sides,

↪ In this, the direction of incident               two inclined rectangular sides

ray and emergent ray of light are               and one rectangular base

parallel to each other.                                ↪ In this, the direction of incident

ray and emergent ray of light are

                                                                       parallel to each other.

When narrow beam of monochromatic light passes through

Glass Slab :- It has deviated from the actual path but the direction of the incident ray and the emergent ray are parallel to each other.

Glass Prism :- It has deviated from the actual path but the direction of the incident ray and the emergent ray are not parallel to each other.

When a narrow beam of white light passes through

↪ Glass slab, it does not split into its constituent colour. The direction of incident ray and the emergent ray of light are parallel to each other.↪

↪ Glass prism, it splits into its constituent seven colour. The direction of incident and emergent of light are not parallel to each other.
