Resilience is a metaphor derived from Material Science, but is more than just recovering from stress or strain.

Resilience is a mechanism that helps you to survive through adversity and recover from even the most hostile of situations.

People who show good resilience possess:

• a firm, reliable acceptance of reality

• a deep belief, supported by strongly held values, that life is meaningful

• an ability to be creative, adaptable and to improvise.

Recovery to adverse conditions is possible with one or two of these qualities, but to be truly resilient you need to develop all three.

Mental toughness describes the capacity to deal effectively with stress, pressures and challenges, and perform to the best of their ability, irrespective of the circumstances in which they find themselves. So it is drawing on reserves to get through the present moment.

Put simply, toughness is about managing and dealing with stress over the short term, whilst resilience is about managing and dealing with stress over the long term.
