Answer:

1) Manufacturers create a product! They sell it through a distribution channel in bulk to a company that will distribute it to sales companies.

2) The distribution company is a Wholesaler that breaks down the bulk packaging and sells smaller blocks of the product to local sales outlets.

3) The local sales outlets sell the product at it's full Retail Price to the public and are the local Retail stores that you see in your local shopping district.

That's the general idea. Take Toilet Paper as an example. The manufacturer produces a truckload of the stuff & sells it to a wholesaler who sells a pallet (4' x 4' x 4') of the stuff to a retailer (grocery store) that then sells individual 4-packs to the customer.

You could buy the stuff Wholesale, but how long would it take to go through a pallet of TP? Or, for that matter, a Truckload of the stuff?
