Hey there....
The main difference between rough endoplasmic reticulum and smooth endoplasmic reticulum is that ;
-RER bears ribosomes on its surface while SER do not...
-RER have more cisternae (flattened sacs)
-SER have more tubules (cylindrical tubes)

Based upon the functions ...they too have many differences ...

-RER is mainly involved in protein synthesis ..... while SER is involved in lipid synthesis...

- RER also performs other functions like helps in formation of SER, nuclear envelope, and plasma membrane... also forms lysosome, perixisome via golgi body..

- SER is involved in many other functions like synthesis of steroidal sex hormones, detoxification of xenobiotics by cytochrome p450 .., helps in muscular constriction, helps in glycogen metabolism and formation of sphaerosome, glyoxisomes via golgi body ..

Biogenesis is the process of formation of plasma membrane... which is composed of mainly lipids and proteins...
As lipids and proteins are synthesized by ER ...hence endoplasmic reticulum also help in biogenesis....

Hope the answer helps u!!"
