Succession of micro-organisms including fungi and bacteria occurring within a microhabitat is known as microsuccession or serule. This type of succession occurs in recently disturbed communities or newly available habitat, for example in recently dead trees, animal droppings, exposed glacial till, etc.

A seral community (or sere) is an intermediate stage found in ecologicalsuccession in an ecosystem advancing towards its climax community. In many cases more than one seral stage evolves until climax conditions are attained.
