For that first you need to understand words (shabda) ,
the shabdas are not used in sentences, they are independent but when these shabdas are tied to the gender, and other things,
and gets changed according to the sentence it is no longer a sabd but has become a pada.
Pada are dependent.

शब्द - एक या अनेक वर्णों से बना हुआ अर्थपूर्ण समूह शब्द कहलाता है।

जैसे – राम, आम, खा, इत्यादि

पद - जब इन अर्थपूर्ण शब्दों का प्रयोग वाक्य में किया जाता है, तो उस शब्द को पद कहते है। यह शब्द मात्र शब्द नहीं होते हैं बल्कि यह शब्द वाक्य में संज्ञा, वचन, लिंग, सर्वनाम, विशेषण, क्रिया, इत्यादि दर्शाता है। और वाक्य में प्रयोग होने वाले शब्द पद कहलाते हैं।

जैसे – राम आम खा रहा है।
इस वाक्य में राम और आम शब्द का पद परिचय है संज्ञा, इसका वचन है एकवचन, और खा रहा है का पद परिचय है क्रिया।
