Meristematic Tissue

Meristematic tissue in plants is made of cells that enable the development of the plant's specialized tissues and the overall growth of the plant's structure. These cells are undifferentiated, meaning that they are not initially specialized in anything themselves, and they will continue to divide indefinitely; in these ways, meristematic cells function like stem cells in animals. Meristematic tissue is concentrated in two places in plants: the shoot apical meristem, which controls the growth of the above-ground part of the plant, and the root apical meristem, which is responsible for the growth of the plant's roots.

Root Apical Meristems

The root apical meristem is a region of growth tissue near the tip of each root. The meristematic cells in this region grow in two directions, both backward toward the above-ground shoot and forward toward the tip of the root. As the cells grow backward from the meristem, they first elongate and grow larger, and then they begin to differentiate into specialized cells that make up various kinds of root tissues.
