The extensometer provided the average extension of the selected length. This essentially fails to provide variation of localized strains in inhomogeneous materials like a welded joint. Whereas, the strain gauge provides the average strain for gauge length of the strain gauge which is in mm. Furthermore, the resolution of strain will be in plus or minus 2 micro strain. The serious drawback of strain gauging method is that at high temperatures, gauge non-linearities will over shade the actual strain even with temperature correction. In such a situation, when one desires high resolution strain, video extensometry or digital image correlation is the solution.
