Difference between synchronous motor and alternator

"There is no such thing as a synchronous generator. If it is an AC generator, the speed must be kept at a given level to maintain frequency. The difference is just in terms of action, one is motoring i.e converts electrical energy into mechanical and the other is generating i.e converts mechanical energy in electrical."
