NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
When the effect of two hormones acting together is greater than the sum each hormone acting alone, the two hormones are said to have a synergistic effect . E.g., secretion of estrogens from ovaries and luteinizing hormone (LH) from anterior pituitary gland both are required for normal production of oocytes by the ovaries.
Note: Synergistic effect can also be seen in case of certain drugs. Effect of two drugs taken together is greater than the sum their separate effect at the same doses, for example, a combination of alcohol and other drug.
When one hormone opposes the action of another hormone, the two hormones are said to have antagonistic effects. E.g., Insulin and glucagon are antagonistic pair as insulin promotes synthesis of glycogen in liver cells whereas glucagon stimulates breakdown of glycogen in liver.
