Splitting tensile strength" is normally done to measure the tensile strength of brittle materials like concrete, mortar, etc. Because direct tensile test can not be done on such types of materials. Therefore, splitting tensile test is done where the cylindrical concrete/mortar is split into two parts under the action of compressive force. On the other hand, Direct tensile test is done to measure the tensile strength of ductile materials like steel bar.
