Difference between topic and scope of passage

To be fair, GRE questions often include words that may possibly be out of the scope of even a well read native speaker of English.
In my opinion, 'topic' refers to the subject that the author is going to talk about.(Obviously)
Scope, however, refers to the umm..areas? that the author will be drawing on to speak about said topic.
Let me clarify with an example :
Suppose there is a passage entitled "Lessons Learnt From War" (lame title, I know)
But the author mentions specifically, that he will only be referring to the Crusades, and not any other war such as the World Wars.
As such, the topic is "Lessons learnt from war", and the scope is limited to the Crusades.
Hope I helped
