The main difference between transitive and intransitive verb is the matter of 'object'

A transitive verb will always have an object

Eg: Ravi was playing football

Here 'playing' is the verb which is transitive. The object here is 'football'

There are 2 ways to find object by questioning the verb 'what' and by 'whom'

Eg: Shek was given a certificate by the teacher.

Here the verb is 'was given'
To find out the objects question the verb 'what' and 'by whom'

1. Shek was given WHAT?
2. Shek was given BY WHOM

Therefore 'certificate' and 'teacher' are objects.

Objects can be classified as direct object and indirect object. Living objects are indirect object (in this case 'teacher') and non living objects are direct objects (in this case 'certificate')

An Intransitive verb will never have an object

Eg: The baby was crying bitterly

Here the verb is 'was crying'

The baby was crying WHAT
------- NO ANSWER

THEREFORE IT IS AN INTRANSITIVE VERB

'bitterly' will be regarded as the complement
