The word guru means a teacher or preceptor. In ancient times a guru imparted both spiritual and secular knowledge to his disciples. He was a counsellor and mentor as well. He helped to mould the personality of the students and cultivate values in them. He was himself a role model who inspired them to lead ideal lives.
In the present times, a teacher's role is mostly restricted to the classroom. They are mainly involved in imparting secular education to the students. But there are many teachers who are role models for their students. They mentor and nurture the students.

In the ancient days the main focus was not only impart of knowledge but also the moral education and personality development was remain the main concentration. As the teacher of the ancient was play as the role model for the students so the teacher role was thought to be very necessary in a man's teaching.
