As a rule of thumb, the square pitch is used in situations where the shell-side stream is highly viscous or fouling. The square pitch enables regular & mechanical scraping/cleaning of the tube surface.

Triangular pitches are more efficient i. e., accommodate more tubes. Thus they are the preferred tube arrangement wherever possible.
