Tropical Grasslands

Tropical grasslands are located near the Equator, between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. They cover much of Africa as well as large areas of Australia, South America and India.Grass and various types of herbs form the natural vegetation of these regions. Grass in tropical grasslands often grows up to 3-6 feet tall. Savannas have tall grass with scattered trees like acacia and baobab. Low shrubs have thorns instead of leaves.

Temperate Grasslands

Grass forms the major part of the vegetation in temperate grasslands. Many species of grasses are found here such as purple needle grass, wild oats, foxtail, rye grass and buffalo grass. These regions have dark soil which is rich in nutrients and is good for farming. The North American temperate grasslands are called prairies, in Eurasia temperate grasslands are known as steppes, in South America they are called pampas, in South Africa they are known as velds and in Australia they are called downs.
