Lowland rice is grown in fields that can be flooded and they are either rain-fed or irrigated. Upland rice is grown without flooding usually on hillsides in more mountainous regions. Different countries and regions have their own preferences for varieties of rice.

Some of the differences between the Upland Rice and Lowland rice are as following :
1. Lowland Rice is grown in an area with elevation usually no higher than 200 m (660 ft) from sea level while as Upland rice is grown in an area above 200 m.
2. Lowland Rice is grown on wet soil while as upland rice is grown on dry soil.
3. Lowland rice is subject to floods, while as it is not a case with Upland Rice.
4. Lowland Rice has fertile soil than Upland rice.
5. Lowland rice is rain fed while as Upland rice is dependent on irrigation.
