Rate of change of displacement with time is called velocity. Vector quantity. Means it has direction.
Rate of change of distance with time is called
speed. Scalar quantity. Means it don't have direction.
Rate of change of velocity if velocity increases is called acceleration.

kvnmurty: whether velocity increases or decreases the rate of change in velocity is acceleration.. it is a vector quantity.
Faris1: But when velocity decreases,it is called retardation.

Speed, being a scalar quantity, is the rate at which an object covers distance. The average speed is the distance (a scalar quantity) per time ratio. ... On the other hand, velocity is a vector quantity; it is direction-aware. Velocity is the rate at which the position changes
