A gravity dam is a stable and strong dam which is constructed from stone or concrete, to hold back water. It uses the weight of the material to resist the horizontal pressure of the water that is pushing it. Gravity dams are independent of any other section of the dam. 

Based on their structural height, the gravity dams are classified as low, medium and high dams.

Low Gravity dams – it has a structural height of up to 100 feet.

High Gravity dams – it has a structural height over 300 feet.
