Metasomatism or (hydrothermal) alteration refers to changing a rock's composition in an open system, i.e. a system where mass can enter and leave, not just volatiles but also refractory elements.

Difference between Metasomatism and Metamorphism

Explanation:

  • Metamorphism-These rocks are formed from the old rocks which can be igneous , sedimentary or metamorphic.
  • The formation of these rocks takes place at increased temperature and pressure at considerable depths in the earth's crust.
  • During metamorphism, recrystallization takes place and formation of new minerals and texture takes place.

Metasomatism-During metamorphism recrystallisation occurs which give rise to various chemical reactions.

During recrystallization the bulk chemistry of the rock remain nearly constant.

If other elements are introduced due to circulating fluids ,then the resulting metamorphism is known as metasomatism.
