if an atom loses or gains it's electrons it attains a charge and is called an ion

an ion has charge either positive or negative

but an atom has no charge

the charge containing elements are called ions........and the smallest particle of matter which may or may not exist freely and take part in a chemical reactions. ....are atoms. .
