What you put this energy into is not determined although it can become inspiration or nothing at all. If you say that something inspired you than it has lead you to produce something yourself (even if it is just an idea) since that is the meaning of the word.
However, both are reactions within the consciousness. The external thing reacts with your own karma and leads to a result. While excitation points out that a reaction has occurred, inspiration describes that there is a product.
