A drone is a male honey bee. Unlike the female worker bee, drones do not have stingers and gather neither nectar nor pollen. A drone's primary role is to mate with an unfertilized queen
First of all, worker bees and drones differ in their appearance and function in the hive. Drones are stout, look slightly overweight and have big beautiful eyes. Their most important feature is that they are vulnerable,not possessing a sting. They take longest in their development from egg to developed bee and therefore offer best feeding conditions for the blood drinking varroa mites. Since they need bigger combs for their development, the worker bees produce extra large comb frames for them, easily distinguished from other brood combs. Beekeepers profit from the need for specific brood frames for drones by disposing of these frames before the drones can hatch. Tits love hacking the larvae from their protective combs. This might sound barbaric, especially since at warm weather conditions the defenseless larvae continue their developement until they hatch as a fully developed bee. However , taking out frames with drone brood is one the most important strategies of the beekeeper to protect the hive from an infestation of varroa mites. Despite these activities, several drone combs are also contained in mixed frames, containing also regular worker brood and cannot be disposed off that way. So, there will always survive a certain popultation of drones.
