Hi friend,

Baser on the carbon content, moisture, and duration of buried, coal can be categorised into 4 types-:

=>Anthracite-:

-oldest variety
-carbon content is 85%-95%
-very less moisture
-non polluting
-found at great depth
-used in industry as a fuel.

=>Bituminous-:

-second oldest variety.
-carbon content is 75%-85%
-8%-10% impurity
-minimum or marginal pollution
-found comparatively at a higher level.
-used for power generation and making for coke.
-grayish black in colour.

Lignite-:

-comparatively younger fuel than Bituminous.
-carbon content is 60%-75%
-around 20% of impurity
-releases smoke and some other gases.
-found below peat
-used in thermal power plants.

Peat-:

-light brown in colour
-youngest variety of coal
-carbon content is 30%-60%
-low grade/quality fuel because it has got high impurity levels
-produces too much of smoke.
-found above other types of coal
-used as a domestic fuel.

So the best type of coal is ANTRACITE and the bad is PEAT.

Hope it helps................
