Heating of any substance strongly in the absence of air or oxygen which results in formation of refined product is known as destructive distillation.

We obtain different products from this-:

PRODUCT-1 is Coke.
It is a solid fuel and is smokeless. It is black in colour, tough, porous. It has 98%carbon content.
It is use in manufacturing of alloys. Used as a reducing agent during metallurgy. Used for making produces and water gas.

PRODUCT-2 and BY PRODUCT-1 is Coal tar.
It is thick oily liquid. It is a mixture of 200 substances. Rich in carbon based compounds used for making chemicals like naphthalene, explosives, perfumes, drugs, and plastics.
