Types of Software licenses:
Proprietary
Where the author of the code will define the license terms specific for his software. You need to specifically read what is included, sometimes possible to negotiate with the author the range of acceptable terms for you.
Copyleft
Where you have access to the code and are permitted to make changes or build your software on top of copyleft under the condition that you provide the whole source code (yours + copyleft code) when distributing your product to end-users. Notable example is GPL.
Weak-Copyleft
Similar copyleft, difference is that (in principle) you only need to distribute the source code of the code blocks that you are using from other authors. Some rules apply. Notable example is LGPL.
Liberal
Are usually short texted licenses with fewer requirements, such as providing proper credits to the original author. Notable example is the MIT license.
