differentiate between a metal oxide and a metal hydroxide

Hey mate......
When metal reacts with oxygen, it forms metal oxide.
When metal reacts with water, it forms metal hydroxide.

a metal oxide and hydroxide are both bases, but in a metal oxide a positive metal ion combines with a negative oxygen ion (O2-) for e.g., K+ + O2- → K2O

in metal hydroxide the metal combines with negatively charged hydroxyl ion(OH-) for e.g. Na+ + OH- → NaOH
