◆ Addition reactions -

  • In addition reaction, two or more substances combine to form a single substance.
  • Typically unsaturated hydrocarbons are converted to saturated hydrocarbons by addition of hydrogen.
  • For example, hydrogenation reactions of acetylene.

◆ Substitution reactions -

  • In substitution reaction, one functional group of compound is replaced by another group.
  • Typically hydrogen atom of saturated hydrocarbon is replaced by other functional group.
  • For example, halogenation of ethane.
