● Answer -
Phenol and other alcohols can be distinguished with the help of ferric chloride test.
● Explaination-
- When few drops of 1% FeCl3 are added to phenol solution in test tube, violet ppt is formed.
3C6H5OH + FeCl3 → Fe(OC6H5)3 + 3HCl
- No change is observed when drops of 1% FeCl3 are added to aliphatic alcohols.
R-OH + FeCl3 → NO REACTION
