Axis of Rotation :-

When a body rotates each particle of the body rotates along the fixed circle. The straight line joining the centers of these circles is called axis of rotation.

Line of Action of a Force :-

The line along which a force act is called the line of action of a force.

The following are the differences between the axis of rotation and the line of action of a force-

  • The path taken by a force F is a geometric illustration of the application or action of the force.
  • It is the line that passes through the location where a force is exerted in the same plane as the vector F.
  • Whereas, the straight line around which all the points of a body rotate in a circle is the axis of rotation.
  • Any celestial body's axis of rotation is an idealized line that passes through its center of mass and around which the celestial body revolves.
  • The rotation of a compact disc in a CD player is a basic illustration of rotation about a fixed axis.
  • In the given figure, AA' is the axis of rotation around which the given object rotates.
  • BC is the line of force, i.e. the force is exerted on the object on that plane.
