Metallothermic reduction reactions (MRRs) are displacement reactions that use reactive metals to reduce compounds so that metals, alloys, nonmetal elementary substances, and composites are produced, often in a scalable manner.

Carbothermic reactions involve the reduction of substances, often metal oxides (O2^2-), using carbon as the reducing agent. These chemical reactions are usually conducted at temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius. Such processes are applied for production of the elemental forms of many elements.

Answer:

Electrolytic reducation is used for metals with higher reactivity. Carbon reduction is used for metals in middle of reactivity series. Since highly reactive metals cannot be reduced using carbon this method is used whereas the middle reactive metals can be easily reduced down using carbon.
