Trade unions are social organisations that seek to protect and promote economic and non-economic interests of workers both at the workplace and in the larger society. But they are in 'crisis'. This has chastened the rustic unions. The marketization drive has created several vulnerable groups and brought together a number of civil society organisations. There are two views on the dynamics between trade unions and other civil society organisations. The 'hard' view is that trade unions are no longer relevant; they are 'obsolete'. The 'soft' view is that trade unions are facing challenges but are still relevant. This paper takes the latter view. It discusses conflicts and tensions that could prevail in social coalitions, but points out that there exists enough common ground for joint action. It suggests broadening of union agenda and argues for social movement unionism. In a conceptual case for a 'broad movement', it argues for the need to link labour rights with human rights.
