Clay soil is soil that is comprised of very fine mineral particles and not much organic material. The resulting soil is quite sticky since there is not much space between the mineral particles, and it does not drain well at all.
Loam is soil composed mostly of sand, silt, and a smaller amount of clay. By weight, its mineral composition is about 40–40–20% concentration of sand–silt–clay, respectively.

If the proportion of fine particles is relatively higher, then it is called clayey soil.
If the amount of large and fine particles is about the same then the soil is called loamy soil.
