☆☆ DICOT ROOT ☆☆

¤¤ Cortex is simple and homogenous. It is made up of Parenchyma cells.

¤¤ Endodermis is prominant with casperian thickenigs.

¤¤ Number of protoxylem groups less than six. [ exception in Ficus].

¤¤ Secondary growth takes place .

¤¤ Metaxylem vessels are generally polygonal.

¤¤ Conjunctive vessels is Parenchymatous.

¤¤ Pith is very small or absent.

☆☆ MONOCOT ROOTS ☆☆

¤¤ Cortex is well developed. In some cases it develops one or more layers of thick-walled cells towards outerside, called exodermis. Rest of the cells are parenchymatous.

¤¤ Endodermis is more prominent showing casparian thickeings in radial and inner walls are more prominent.

¤¤ Number of protoxylem groups more than six [polyarch] .

¤¤ There is no secondary growth[ except in Dracena, Yucca & Aloe ].

¤¤ Metaxylem vessels are generally oval or rounded.

¤¤ Conjunctive tissue around Metaxylem vessels is sclerenchymatous.

¤¤ Pith is large.

Key Differences between Dicot root and Monocot Root. In a dicot root, the number of xylem and phloem is continuous while in a monocot, they are numerous in number. ... The cortex of a Monocot root is broad while that of a dicot root is narrow. Secondary growth occurs in a dicot root but not in a monocot root.
