it always refers to the movement of water diffusion is that both solvent and solute particle free to move but osmosis only the solvent molecules (water )

Diffusion:
Diffusion involves the free mixing of the solution without a semi permeable membrane.
It is shown by solution as well as gases.
It can neither be stopped not can be reversed.
Osmosis:
Osmosis involves the use of semi permeable membrane.
It is shown by solutions only.
It can be stopped or reversed by applying external pressure on the solution having a higher concentration.
