Depersonalization can’t exist without Dissociation being a mechanism in the body.

Dissociation is more of a physical symptom, it’s spacing out, it’s floating away, it’s even looking at your body in third person perspective as you go about your day on auto pilot.

Depersonalization is literally being unable to feel your edges, to see yourself in the mirror, and connect that, that is really you looking back. For us, as a DID system, depersonalization is like an inbetween state. It’s an alter looking in the mirror that can’t see themselves. It’s the entirety of “I” that can’t see the “I”, or even recognize our own face.

It’s wandering around, switching personalities and forgetting you are human, forgetting you can be seen by others, and even worrying that nobody will see you, and you will randomly get bumped into, or hit by a car because you feel so out of touch with your body and identity.

When we depersonalize, we won’t turn on the light in the bathroom, because the mirror becomes our enemy. It is a source of distress, to see someone that doesn’t resemble any of us.
